Mathematics is as much an aspect of culture as it is a collection of algorithms. — Carl Boyer
The Mathematics department in Mayo believes in practical applications more than just theoretical knowledge and therefore conducts various events round the year.
Beyond the class textbooks there is a lot more to Mathematics. After a lot of research done by six of our students of classes 8th and 9th presently, made us feel proud by presenting the paper on the topics “Zeller’s Rule”, “origami and its applications”and “ Nine point Circlr” at the AMTI Conference held in Banglore from the 27th – 29th December 2017.
Mathematics Olympiads and quizzes enhance students’ higher order thinking and problem solving skills needed for success in today’s competitive world. It also creates interest in the subject. On the 20nd January 2018, there was a National Mathematics Olympiad for classes 4 -9. They have also appeared for an International Assessment test conducted by ICAS division of the University of New South Wales where they performed exceedingly well securing 99 percentile too. Last year we published our first Math newsletter ‘Eureka” .Our efforts were to make the students interested in the subject and aware of researches in the field of Mathematics along with various articles, puzzles, news and games. Inter house Mathematics quiz for middle section has always been much awaited event in Mayo.
Apart from teaching the prescribed syllabi, teachers play an important role in every student’s life. In order to enhance this relationship, a workshop was conducted for the teachers in Mayo College Girls School on the topic of Realistic Math education by Mr. Syed Sattar an eminent educationist. Mathematics faculty of various schools in Ajmer participated and shared their valuable and enriching experiences.
We also introduced Inter House Mathematics Symposium for classes 10th-12th last year spreading awareness amongst students about application of mathematics in various fields. Students came up with interesting topics such as Mathematics in Predicting Terrorism, earthquakes, casino games, population and architecture.
We are constantly endeavouring to successfully conduct all these events and many more not only to enhance the knowledge base of students but also give them the opportunity to boost their confidence.
