Street Markets in Pushkar

Pushkar has a magnetism all of its own, and is quite unlike anywhere else in Rajasthan. It's a prominent Hindu pilgrimage town 11km from Ajmer and boasts of hundreds of temples. The main street is one long bazaar. Known especially for stone and silver jewelry, available at low prices, the market is also flooded with art and craftwork including authentic Rajasthani puppets and apparels showcasing the famous tie & dye (Bandhani) print as well as intricate mirror work. Despite the commercialism, the town remains enchantingly small and authentically mystic.

Pushkar Lake

Pushkar Lake is a sacred lake of the Hindus. The Hindu scriptures describe as it as "Tirtha-Raj" – the king of pilgrimage sites related to a water-body and relate it to the mythology of the creator-god Brahma, whose most prominent temple stands in Pushkar. The Lake also finds mention on coins dating back to as early as 4th century BC. It is surrounded by 52 bathing Ghats (a series of steps leading to the lake), where pilgrims throng in large numbers to take a 'sacred bath', which is believed to cleanse sins and cure skin diseases. Pushkar Lake and its precincts offer a plethora of monuments of national importance and boast of over 500 Hindu temples circumscribing it.

Jagatpita Brahma Mandir

Situated on the banks of the sacred Pushkar Lake, the Jagatpita Brahma Temple is one of the very few existing temples dedicated to the Hindu creator-god Brahma in India and remains the most prominent amongst them. The temple dating back to the 14th century is believed to be almost 2000 years old. It is mainly built of marble and stone stabs and has a distinct red pinnacle and a hamsa bird motif. The temple sanctum sanctorum holds the central images of Brahma and his second consort Gayatri. Globally the temple has also been identified as one of the ten most religious places in the world and one of the five most sacred pilgrimage places for the Hindus, in India.
